enBuilt in 1400 by the Biringucci family, Palazzo del Capitano, after lengthy but detailed restoration work has now been returned to its ancient splendour. Today the building is a charming hotel with 13 rooms and 3 suites, all are equipped with every comfort. During the winter months breakfast is served in the old stables with vaulted ceilings in front of an open fire. In summer guests can relax in the large garden amongst lavender and aromatic herbs in the shade of vines and ancient olive trees. Just a short distance from the Relais hotel is the restaurant ‘Il Vecchio Forno’ which is owned by the Genovese family. Here guests can enjoy the flavours of antique recipes accompanied by fine Tuscan wines from the old cellars. Palazzo del Capitano is situated in the centre of San Quirico d’Orcia, a well-known Tuscan medieval village which in 2004 became a UNESCO World Heritage site. It lies at 500 metres above sea-level and within the ‘Parco della Val d’Orcia’. Built on the site of an old Etruscan village San Quirico was a staging post for travellers and pilgrims on the Via Francigena which led from Canterbury to Rome. Within the old walls it’s possible to visit the Romanesque Collegiata dating from the 11th century close by is Palazzo Chigi built in the 1600s, the Horti Leonini gardens are a fine example of an Italian garden of the 1500s and there is also the remaining part of the ‘Ospedale di S. Maria della Scala. San Quirico d’Orcia is mentioned in many history books thanks to the historic meeting in 1155 between the ambassadors of Pope Adrian IV and Federico I of Swabia known as ‘Barbarossa’. It is this meeting which is re-enacted each year on the third Sunday in June with medieval costumes, flag throwing and an archery competition. Just a few kilometres from San Quirico is the ancient spa of Bagno Vignoni where Lorenzo de’Medici and Saint Catherine of Siena came to bathe in the warm and soothing water. From San Quirico it is easy to reach places of great cultural interest such as Montalcino, Montepulciano, Monticchiello and Pienza, the birthplace of Pope Pio II. For nature-lovers it’s possible to explore the splendid Sienese landscape on foot, by bicycle or on horseback and discover its hidden corners.
